Karnala Fort

Karnala hill fort near Panvel, India, was probably built by the Yadavs in the 13th century. The fort had strategic importance overlooking the Bor pass and main trade route linking the Konkan coast to the Maharashtra interior. It changed hands on numerous occasions, being occupied by the Tughlaq, the Gujarat Sultanate, the Nizam Shah and also the Marathas and the Portuguese. It finally fell to the British in 1918.
The Karnala fort complex contains two forts on higher and lower levels. In the middle of the higher level is a 125 feet high basalt pillar, known as Pandu's and shown in this picture. This was a watchtower, now home to wild bee hives.
Karnala Fort is also known as Funnel Hill. It stands on a hill in the middle of the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, a popular bird watching and hiking area in the Raigad region of India.
